The Minorities

The Minorities
Dr. Jassim Taqui

“ There is no compulsion in religion.” Thus declare Holy Quran in a majestic proclamation (2:265).

This brings us to the issue of minorities, who continue to suffer discrimination by the majority in a state that was basically established to protect the universal rights of minority Muslims in the Indian Subcontinent.

The story of persecuting minorities is tragic in Pakistan. They suffer  because of their physical or cultural characteristics. They are signaled out from the others in the society. They live in differential and an unequal treatment . Their ordeal continues unabated to the extent that they resigned to their fate; accepting to live with the collective discrimination by the majority.

The UN Charter recognizes the issue when unanimously agreed on 18thDecember, 1992 to promote and respect human rights and to guarantee fundamental freedoms for all and without distinction as to race, sex, language and religion.

Thus, it is high time that the Parliament should legislate to ensure the rights of minorities as per the injunctions of Holy Quran and the UN Charter.
