Signing Paris Climate Change Agreement

United Nations will celebrate the official signing of Paris Climate Conference on 22nd April 2016, which also coincides with the ‘Earth Day’. The Paris agreement is an historic event although it is the beginning of a long process to control and reduce emission of Carbon Dioxide in a sustainable manner.

These were the highlights given in the message of the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon on the occasion where heads of state and government; ministers for foreign affairs and other government representatives having the authority to sign the agreement were present.

These government officials will be called up to the podium to sign the historic agreement. So far, 92 states out of 150 have agreed to sign it while 10 states have agreed to ratify it.

Earlier, UNIC representative in Pakistan, Vittorio Cammarota, emphasized the importance of mobilizing the media and civil society to highlight the significance of the agreement.  

Also speaking on the occasion, the Cooperation Attaché of the French Embassy, Olivier HUYNH-VAN, outlined the coordination between France and the Pakistani delegation at the Paris Climate Summit Conference. He further disclosed that there was tremendous work being done between the two countries with regards to the clean environment.

Elaborating, he said that 13 organizations and NGOs of the civil society in Lahore are cooperating with the French Embassy in spreading awareness among the people about climate change.

Bilal Anwar, Senior Manager of  COMSATS Institute of Information Technology in Islamabad, also spoke about the agreement. He pointed out that the civil society was working with enthusiasm and in an effective and composed manner to enforce the Climate Change
Agreement.

However, he reminded the audience that only the skeleton of the agreement had been erected and the rest would be followed and implemented. He also paid rich tribute to the French diplomacy for their immense inputs contained in the final form of the Paris Climate Summit Agreement.
