Pakistan embraces Saudi Arabia and Yemen

Pakistan embraces Saudi Arabia and Yemen
Dr. Jassim Taqui

It was a time for a change and a definite return to the Arab scene. The Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Yemen Mohammed Motahar Alashabi hosted a dinner on the honor of the visiting Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdulmalik Abduljatlik Al-Mekhlafi and his delegation at his residence.
A large number of Arab Ambassadors, DHMs, DG Middle East and Additional Secretary were in attendance. A select group of intellectuals and media were also invited to the landmark event.
The atmosphere was serene. Both Alashabi and Al-Mekhlafi were delighted but would not disclose what had transpired. However, Al-Bab knew in advance the reason behind this joy. The Military Establishment prevailed in the end and decided to lend support to the traditional allies of Pakistan. There were reports stating that the army would send 35000-40000 troops to shore up the vulnerable southern borders of Saudi Arabia against foreign hostile attacks. This is in addition to over 70000 troops, experts, trainers and professional Pakistani troops working in different departments of the Saudi Armed Forces.

The move has emboldened the Advisor to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz to declare support to the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Saudi Arabia. However, Aziz failed to underscore the 1982 Mutual Defence Treaty between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, which obliges Pakistan to send troops to the holy lands to protect them from all foreign danger. The treaty is clear-worded and does not require the approval of the parliament to protect Saudi Arabia.
