British legal system as a model

British legal system as a model
Dr. Jassim Taqui

Don’t believe the media houses. They magnify events and attempt to create a state of confusion, anarchy and despair. Their problem is that they have to be relevant and produce news and events round the clock. Let me tell you the truth. The military and civilian leadership are on one page. The system is functioning though there are marked defects and difficulties in matters pertaining to accountability , war on terror and combating economic terror.

One would advise the decision makers to follow the British legal system. It is a system of specialist tribunals and English laws that are based on common law principles. It is a pluralistic  system based on civil-law principles. The system enjoys detailed rules on common law and equality. The supreme Court is the final court of appeal for all UK civil cases.

The interesting aspect of the system, however, is that it doesn’t have a written constitution. This is so because the system has been too stable for too long. Another aspect is that there is  an atmosphere of trust between the ruling party and the Opposition.

It is the absence of trust that hinders the system to function smoothly in Pakistan. Furthermore, the ruling party and media should desist from continued attempts to derail the system.
