EU Switch Asia HPCogen Pak Project Conducts Two-Week Training on Power Generation and Transmission for NEPRA

Islamabad, September 2, 2016: The EU Switch Asia’s HPCogen Pak Project organized a specialized Capacity Building Program for NEPRA officials. The purpose of the two-week training held at Islamabad was to enhance the understanding of NEPRA officials regarding power generation and distribution systems, utilization of different type of fuels and renewable energy for power generation, power generating system regulations and technicalities.

The course was mainly based on the technical and regulatory aspects of power generation and transmission systems. In the first week, modes of conventional and renewable power generation (biomass, solar, wind and hydropower) were discussed in detail. The HPCogen Pak experts shared their experiences of power generation in India and highlighted the best practices and policy drivers for the success of RE in Asia which could be replicated in Pakistan.  

In the second week, the focus of the training was in the elaboration of power transmission planning and methodologies, load flow studies, power protection systems, HVDC systems, stability studies and large-scale integration of renewable energy into grid keeping in view its technical and regulatory issues. A detailed lecture was also given to NEPRA officials as to how to evaluate power projects proposals seeking generation licences.

After the last training session, the participants shared their views about the programme and their learning experiences.  According to participants’ feedback, the training by the HPCogen Pak experts afforded a unique opportunity of learning from them. Insights into HVDC systems were very valuable, as the area is a new concept in Pakistan. They appreciated the training programme and were eager to participate in the upcoming training under HP Cogen-Pak project. The HPCogen Pak experts appreciated the dedication, enthusiasm, and interactions with the participants.
