Targeting the Russians in Syria

Targeting the Russians in Syria
Dr. Jassim Taqui

When Al-Bab started in 1972 writing in Pakistan Times a weekly column titled,” Focus On The Middle East,” most of the think-tanks and Pakistan Foreign Office were contemptuous. Their stance was that the Middle East issue was” not important.”

However, the readers were fascinated by the issue. Hence, credit goes to the readers that Focus On The Middle East continues in The Pakistan Times and other national dailies for 46 years.

Now, the whole world is anxious and keen to read the latest developments of the ME. It seems that the ME and fallouts are  determining the destiny of mankind with the appearance of ISIS and Cold War II between the United States and the Russian Federation.

Today, 5th September 2016 the ISIS and its allies have been able to come very close to the Russian naval base in Tartus city with twin blasts that rocked the entrance to the base.

Given the link of ISIS with US-supported terrorists in Syria, Moscow might interpret this incident as an indirect message from Washington to the Kremlin. This reading is in line with the latest stance by Hillary Clinton, which is supported by the American Establishment. Clinton started using anti-Russian rhetoric exhibiting the 1950s style of the then McCarthyism of the left. This time, Clinton is introducing Neo-McCarthyism.”

Given the gravity of the situation, the Americans, and the Russians should de-escalate the tension between them. For that matter, they should give up supporting any proxy war in the Middle East. The call of statesmanship warrants the cancellation of schemes of dividing sovereign states. Instead, a serious dialogue should be initiated to resolve the problems peacefully.
